The Associate in Science degree in Graphics Technology provides students with the skills, experience, and knowledge of process to begin a career in the graphic design field. The program emphasizes the development of a design process that begins with the presentation of a design need by a client, continues through research and conceptualization phases, and culminates in press- or screen-ready artwork. Communication between the designer and the client is emphasized and practiced.
Students learn universal design theory and principles such as typography, color theory, balance, symmetry, composition, visual and aesthetic appeal. Students address business and marketing concerns by understanding effective written communication (the development of advertising content, etc.), page layout, and storytelling to best serve the clients’ needs across a variety of media outputs. They are able to integrate that knowledge into print-based and digital multimedia environments using the latest industry standard hardware, software, and techniques. Students advance their skills by exploring a variety of media such as imagery, sound and video and integrating that media into a variety of environments. Students are introduced to front-end web development skills.
Through hands-on projects and practical exercises, students develop the ability to use critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem solving to progress from concept to production and to effectively communicate throughout the process. They experience scenarios that require effective teaming, exceptional individual effort and the ability to succeed in true-to-life, high-demand, and high-pressure situations. Students have many opportunities to develop a portfolio, build their resume, and begin networking in the industry. This program offers students the ability to earn two college credit certificates in Digital Media/Multimedia Authoring and Graphic Design Support as a part of the Associate in Science degree.
